When you create a mojo or work a spell in hoodoo, you can work with not only herbs but also dust and dirt from various places. I often will advise a client to collect dirt from a nearby chapel or church when working a love working, or from the crossroads, a person's yard or driveway, a court house, bank, or other location. I do not give advise to work with graveyard dirt unless I am speaking with an experienced worker of the magical arts.
Dirt from a graveyard is used for various workings such as domination, cursing, or love work. Can you use dirt from ANY grave? No. Absolutely not. In fact, I don't usually even advise clients to use graveyard dirt unless they know how and what they are working with. Occasionally someone will come to me say I have dirt from so and so how can I use it in a spell. If it's from a place other than a cemetery, I can give them instructions on how to use it. If they say they have cemetery dirt, that's a whole other jar of pickles right there! First, to work with graveyard dirt, true graveyard dirt, understand that you are working with the spirit of that grave. Do you know the spirit of that grave, have you properly bought the dirt with coins or whiskey or rum? Please don't go to any grave or cemetery and start buying dirt if you are inexperienced with working hoodoo or magick! I have three cemetery's here nearby within a mile from my house of 10 years. I have spent many days there having a picnic and visiting the graves of the forgotten families there. I bring flowers, clean up around the headstones, or go out after a big storm to straighten up the flowers fallen over. Showing respect in a cemetery is a good way to finding and working with a spirit. I just don't believe that any spirit should be used for your satisfaction. Spirits need to be taken with caution and respect. I respect the dead. I work with ancestors, as ancestor worship is a major component of my religious tradition. I honor the dead regularly in my practices. I am not trying to discourage folks from working with the spirits of the dead, however, trying to lay out some guidelines for the practitioner who wishes to work with the spirit of the dead. The graveyard dirt can be very powerful, but use with serious caution. Giving respects, and paying properly for the dirt or dust from the headstone should be very high on your list of learning to work with graveyard dirt. It's best to work with your own ancestors graves. This way, your spirit knows you, you have already a relationship with them, and your ancestors are going to work for you very well, to keep you happy, protect you, and bring the goals you have to manifestation.
Crossroads dirt can be used in spells like needing to change the luck or direction of a circumstance. It can be used in road opening work as well. With the crossroads, it is an easier method of collecting than graveyard dirt! It's use is probably the most diverse. You can use it to cross someone up, to remove energies or a person from your life, use it in love work to change the direction that the relationship is headed, open new opportunities at the workplace, use as a general location to disperse energies into the universe. Pay the crossroads with three coins, or three pennies, or even some rum. There are times when I go through a crossroads in my car, I give three pennies to the spirit of the crossroads to just to give a thanks for keeping the roads open and clear and opportunities coming in my life or helping me with a big decision I have had to make in my life.
Bank dirt: this is a good one to use if you need a loan from a bank, or you want to do prosperity work, and be sure you are saving your money, making it grow.
Dirt from a church or chapel can be used in love work when you are working on a spouse or your marriage in general. It can be used to symbolize the house of the holy father to shield and guide you or to answer your prayers in any type of circumstances. Believe it or not about 95% of my customers and clients are christian, from all sorts of traditions, Catholic, Pentecostal, Baptist, and Jewish. I have had a small percentage of magickal folk that were Hindu. These folks still practice their beliefs, still believe in God, and Jesus, still pray from the bible. A majority of them even attend the church. Hoodoo isn't wiccan, witchcraft, ceremonial magick, or any of the sorts, it's old folklore from family traditions and local area traditions will have their own methods that get shared. But back on topic, these same practitioners and clients use their local church's dirt in their practices.
Court house dirt is used in cases where you seek justice in a matter or dealing with the court system. Pretty self explanatory...
A person, or more like, a target's driveway or yard is used in a way that you would collect the targets foot print in the dirt to use in a spell to drive them way for instance like hot footing the person out of your life.
There are many other places to collect dirt from, the key is to use your logic and common sense, the location of the dirt is symbolic, but also brings that spirit of that symbol to your work to aid it in manifesting your goal.
